February Birthday Party in Books

Ah–what conversations will we overhear as we listen to this group of writers
celebrating their February birthdays?  Do you have room at your house to host
this bunch?  What will be your seating arrangement?  Can you put Charles Dickens
next to Jules Verne?  I guess we could have a poets’ table—then who are we left with?

If you can’t host a party, at least send a card on the appropriate day . . .

Feb 2                          James Joyce . . . . .Ayn Rand  (ha! that’d be a twosome!)

Feb 3                          Gertrude Stein
Feb 7                          Charles Dickens . . . . . .Laura Ingalls Wilder
Feb 8                          Samuel Butler…………..Jules Verne…………Kate Chopin
Feb 9                          Brendan Behan………..Amy Lowell………Elizabeth Bishop

Feb 10                         Charles Lamb
Feb 12                         Charles Darwin………….(Abraham Lincoln)
Feb 13                         Georges Simenon
Feb 18                         Sholom Aleichem
Feb 19                         Carson McCullers

Feb 21                          W.H. Auden
Feb 22                          Edna St.Vincent Millay………….(George Washington)
Feb 23                          Samuel Pepys……..W.E.B DuBois

Feb 26                          Victor Hugo
Feb 27                          Lawrence Durrell……..H.W. Longfellow………John Steinbeck

The following is printed from one of my all-time favorite “take to a desert island”  books,
A Poem a Day, —and this is what they selected for February 22:That old chestnut, you say.  Still good though.

Give yourself a Valentine this month—read more about one of the authors for the fun of it— and maybe choose one to read.    Let your candle burn at both ends.

Happy Birthday to February writers.

    An interesting crowd….
You know Charles Dickens would have been turning 200 this month! Remarkable.
You can find more about a 200th-birthday celebration for him here:

  2. Oh, to be in London! What fun! But we don’t have to go to London to celebrate—watch for our
very own Dickens of a Day right here on booksandbuttons! Well, a small salute anyway . . .February 7th—-
